Short Introduction to Muhammad

Life in Muhammad

Muhammad was a religious leader. He was God’s prophet sent to guide mankind to better life and to show the true way to paradise. His sayings are known as “hadis”; and his actions are “suna”, the example, to be followers by believers. His biography is refereed to as “sira”. The religious rules he gave are “sharia”.

Muhammad was born in 570. His parents died by the age of 6. He was brought up by his uncle Abu Talib, who married his nephew to a pious woman Kadija in 595. She was a widow aged 40. Muhammad used to go high up in the mountains to meditate and worship God the Creator of the Universe.

Muhammad received an Angel of God in 610. The angels presented Muhammad with God’s book the Koran. Angel said God wants to begin your mission to reform mankind and teach them the truth. Muhammad came down from mountain and told people that God has chosen him to be His messenger.

Muhammad began telling people that after death God will judge all men and women and hold them accountable for their actions. Good people will be given eternal life of joy in paradise. The evil wrong doers will be punished in fire of hell. Muhammad warned people against worshipping false gods. He said there is only one true God who made the universe. Only God should be obeyed and must never be ignored. He warned that making authorities equal or higher than God is never forgiven and those who do not repent will be sent to hell.

Muhammad also taught people moral values which God wanted people to live by. Speak the truth always. Stand with the oppressed. Do not break your promises. Keep good friends. Do not drink alcohol. Serve your parents. Be good to your neighbours. Feed the poor. Help the needy. Do not do shameless deeds. Get married and stay away from fornication and adultery. Defend yourselves and your property. Fight aggressors and resist tyranny. Remember God and pray to Him for help.

Muhammad died in 633 at the age of 63. He was buried in Medina. Muhammad’s shrine is visited by millions of his followers. Muhammad left behind one daughter Fatima and the book of God, the Holy Quran.

There was a dispute as to who should rule after Muhammad. Abu Bakr was selected as the next leader. But some people said Muhammad left Ali as his successor. Two groups are still divided on the issue to this day.
